The founding of a religiously tolerant colony
Rhode Island was founded by Roger Williams in 1636 when he was banned from Massachusetts. He fled to a place called Narraganset Bay where he, Ann Hutchenson, and two other followers began a colony of their own. Rhode Island is a charter colony which means it was chartered to an individual by the king of England.
Roger Williams founded the colony because he wanted a have a place where there was true religious tolerance like the Massachusetts colony had in mind in the first place. He created a democracy where the people in the government could not make laws based on their religious beliefs of put limits on others' ability to worship. All people who came after the government was formed had to sign an agreement saying they would obey the decisions that were made by the majority.
